Oral GLP-1 medications as good as injections!?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 medication originally available as an injection (you might have heard of Wegovy® or Ozempic®). The new oral version, studied in the OASIS-4 Phase 3 clinical trial, is a once-daily pill that may make it easier for patients who prefer not to take injections to access this proven weight-loss therapy.

New research trial

The OASIS-4 trial looked at more than 300 adults living with obesity or overweight who took either oral semaglutide 25 mg daily or a placebo (a sugar pill) for 64 weeks, alongside healthy lifestyle changes. Participants did not have diabetes.

Here’s what researchers found:

Average weight loss:
💊 Semaglutide 25 mg group lost about 13–16% of their body weight.
💊 Placebo group lost only 2–3%.
Big wins:
- Half achieved more than 15% weight loss!
- Almost 30% lost more than 20% of their total weight.

That’s similar to the results seen with the injectable version, but now potentially available in pill form.

What does this mean for you?

If approved by the FDA, oral semaglutide 25 mg could become the first once-daily GLP-1 weight-loss pill available in the U.S. The FDA accepted the application for this oral semaglutide 25 mg (for weight loss) in May 2025, with a projected action date end of 2025.
